Biggest bitcoin miner Kazakhstan shut down online in protest

After the cabinet resigned after a major offensive, the Kazakh government shut down the Internet.

Kazakhstan, which has the world's second largest electricity grid (BTC), is experiencing massive internet disruption due to local protests.

Network provider NetBlocks said on Wednesday that Kazakhstan "experienced worldwide internet disruption in the days following mobile internet use and partial restrictions." Data shows that Kazakhstan's network connectivity still fell 2% on Wednesday.

NetBlocks noted that "this incident could prevent the publication of anti-government propaganda," NetBlocks noted.

Kazakhstan's largest telecommunications company, Kazakhtelecom, has shut the country online, according to some reports. There are reports that cell phones in some cities, such as Almaty, have also been shut down.

Internet connection in Kazakhstan comes after the resignation of the Kazakh government following protests against rising oil prices. President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev toppled the Kazakh government early Wednesday and declared a state of emergency in Almaty and surrounding provinces.

Protests are also the answer for non-democratic countries, according to some analysts. Tim Ash, Emerging Markets Strategist at BlueBay Asset Management, said: “Young Kazakhs know that online, especially Kazakhs in Almaty, will want the same independence as Ukrainians, Georgians, Moldovans, Kyrgyz and the Armenians.

Protesters escalated into heavy fighting, with reports of ongoing clashes between protesters and national security agencies, including the police and the National Guard.

The recent trade impact could affect Bitcoin's global performance. As previously reported by the Cointelegraph, in October 2021, Kazakhstan accounted for 18% of the global share of Bitcoin mining energy, just behind the United States.

After the Chinese government announced a ban on the cryptocurrency industry in September 2021, many Chinese mining companies and bitcoin miners stepped up their services in Kazakhstan.
