Founder of the ENS: How do you see the long-term vision of the ENS and the history of Web3.0?
After 2019, the concept of Web3.0 was redefined and extended rapidly. Conversations on Web2.0 and Web3.0 were made available on the Internet a few days ago by KOL Pan Luan, and the maximum traffic reached 200,000. Obviously, Web3.0 does not just focus on blockchain industry, but is starting to tell a new story in the internet technology industry world.
ENS (Ethereum Domain Name Services) is one of the key components of the Ethereum network, and of course it is also an important part of the development of the Web3.0 network. In the Ethereum ecosystem, more and more processes are starting to support ENS, such as using ENS as a name, NFT as an avatar, using the mirror to write life, and using AR to store content, which is already a model of Web3. implement. 0 people, and a lot of Web3. .0 Principles of Social Media Applications.
How do ENS developers see the ENS vision and history of Web3.0? A few days ago, as a guest of Defiant, we discussed the importance of doing ENS with the host and the story of the future. N. Rhythm BlockBeats defines full text as follows:
Camila Russo (Owner): Nick is the developer and developer of the Ethereum Domain Name Service (ENS), but ENS is the authoring version of Ethereum. He will also talk about any particular points of the interview later. ENS makes it easy to send and receive crypto by attaching Ethereum user-readable names to Ethereum addresses. However, this is only the start of the ENS process and future goals. Basically every name written with .eth that you see on crypto twitter is from ENS. So, before looking at the history and development goals of the ENS, I want to know what supports the development of the ENS.
Nick Johnson: 5 million fans are waiting for you on Webtalk!I remember it was in 2016, when I was still working as a software engineer at Google. At that point, a well-known financial company called me and said, “Do you want to get a job at Ethereum? "," I don't think so, but I think Ethereum will be fun. " Then I wrote some code and then created a few libraries. Then I got a call from the Ethereum Foundation and I asked, "Do you want to work on Go Ethereum or Swarm?" It sounds better because I haven't done any remote or contract work. It was hard for me, but I still chose this profession with courage.
I recently started working at Swarm and one of my projects needed a registrar service to deliver domain names with decentralized content like those found in Swarm and IPFS. So, I only started ENS when I wanted to do an odd job, and it quickly developed from an odd job to a full-time job at the base. They then split up and formed their own organization to create the ENS today.
CR: Can you tell me about Swarm?
New Jersey:Swarm is a stand-alone retailer similar to IPFS. It's a simple Ethereum program, and the support is based on Ethereum. They recently announced the token last, but despite their hard work, they are less popular than IPFS.
The Ethereum Foundation funds the ENS.
CR: Was the ENS the first to benefit from funding and support from the Ethereum Foundation?
New Jersey:Yes, this was the first project of my Ethereum Foundation (EF). But as it keeps growing and improving, I can't do all the work on my own, so my own team, and they give back, don't create a group in the base to work from the ENS to the base, And this. give us a lot of money. We used this money to find the first person willing to work with me. These people volunteered or paid for us while the ENS was still part of the Center. Since then, we have progressed steadily and now have a stable income.
CR: Did this happen at the Foundation? Freedom to create work in-house and start your own business?
New Jersey:I think they want to encourage such a path, but we've never seen that happen before because sometimes it's not true to do it. A basic infrastructure like Go Ethereum, for example, looks different if it's stand-alone. The results. It is difficult to see what they have benefited from an independent organization. But in other words, it makes sense. For us, the Centre's initial funding gave us a foundation and made it all right, and we achieved significant results in the first two years. .
The ENS has never spoken out on the issue of income, and registration fees have been put in place to reduce spam and squatters, but bring in significant income, which is shaping up to be good.
Nick Johnson
CR: Sounds awesome. I would like to ask how much the foundation has provided.
New Jersey:They gave us a million dollars. It should be an event at the time, but when I was asked to make a list of necessary investments, I was thinking about how many people would be hired, how much to pay, etc. In the end, we figured we needed $ 500,000 in expenses for the first year, but the final decision is still in Vitalik's hands. “'Give me a million dollars,' he said.
I am grateful to the people who received a lot of money, and with that money I was able to get through hard times and gain insurance. Without this money, we would not be able to achieve what we are today. Then they gave us a big bonus.
CR: Does the base currently have ENS actions?
New Jersey:No, the money is worth what they give us. Since the Ethereum Foundation is a non-profit foundation, the only reason it gave us money is to improve the quality of the ENS.
ENS operating mode
CR: Can you tell us about your business model and your income list? Previously, you didn't think about the revenue issue when you separated from ENS, but you said that the company's turnover is stable, what is your vision for the future? Do you want to make your business profitable? Can you talk about your real income now?
New Jersey:I always wanted to make ENS a profit rather than a business venture, or wanted to make money because I wanted people to use the domain name. However, the first problem that needs to be addressed when creating a domain name is how to ensure that names that people find useful or useful are immediately taken from scientists and not resold on the aftermarket.
When the creation of a medium does not help eliminate this situation, it is only if the name is stolen cheaply and set the price to get more thought. the most precious thing. Processes like Namecoin have been criticized by scientists for their lack of resources. It is difficult to come up with a name favorable to speculators to resell cheaply in the long run, and the secondary market is also unprofitable. Therefore, we want to avoid this problem as much as possible without endangering the end user.
Early versions of ENS had an auction system, where if you had won the auction you would not have received your deposit if you had signed up. Of course, this approach must have a positive impact in theory, because it's not for the benefit, it's just the cost you have to pay to use your domain name.
The problem is, the squatters and speculators know they are going to sell their name and get their money back. However, long-time investors have avoided the fact that giving domain name registration is not true and cannot get their money back, and this situation is the result of illegal use. Therefore, we have decided to adopt the standard annual registration fee, and the fee is also nominal. For entries of 5 characters or more, the annual entry fee is US $ 5. Ethereum exchange rates are now much more expensive. However, this model limits reliability for some, and unregistered records are returned to the registry, which generates more revenue than necessary.
Based on Ethereum's current value, ENS has around $ 40 million in assets in multiple signatures and DAOs going forward, of which $ 20 million has been acquired by us. For example a 2 year registrar registered one year ago and now the first year we have already received half of the money and the other half will be recognized as previous income then. When DAO goes live in the future, it also has its own tokens to reward those who participate in management or perform certain tasks that follow the development strategy of the ENS.
CR: Is the $ 40 million registration fee pure and is that income separate from the ENS token repository?
New Jersey:Yes, around 10 million of them are USDC and currently at ETH. But, of course, if the DAO passes, he will occupy all administrative positions.
The path to decentralization
CR: Can you tell us about your vision or your goal to create a DAO?
New Jersey:From day one, our goal is to establish a system of autonomy, which means that human domination should be abolished as much as possible, and we firmly believe that this is the best way to establish self-control. At the same time, we need to reduce the number of systems that dependents have to run, and to do this we create systems encrypted with a certificate and gradually remove some rules. Obsolete. Therefore, even the main ENS administrators who use ENS for task management will no longer have this right and can no longer affect the existing registration. They will not be able to do it even if in the end we are led by the DAO.
The second thing we need to do is change our old 70 bar management model to a more distributed one, in the future DAO will control the whole development. We have raised enough money so far, and in addition to operating costs, we will use the money to support other public health projects and other activities in the Ethereum ecosystem. Second, we will continue to improve and refine the ENS to ensure operations are still present.
We don't want to give ENS to DAO, which is still in its infancy, because we think DAO is still new and development is not mature enough when we are created. But since then, even in the last 6 months to a year, the ecosystem has matured. Not only many tools have been developed, but also have rich functionality and smart contract. The OpenZeppelin components we use (standard DAO-based integration) have also successfully eliminated human control by controlling functions and confident that we can take back control in the community.
CR: For developers, it's very gratifying to have the confidence to be able to refer to an organization that they have set up over the past year for a group of insurers. You have just told the management that you have no more politics, which may smell a little strange as it means that no one is controlling the work of the ENS. What do you do with these risks, and why do you think distribution is a deciding factor?
New Jersey:One of the reasons why the ENS has been like this since the day it was created. There are 7 key chains since the exit, which of course is not decentralized enough, but better than me alone. Also, we are not a team from the same company, some of us are from across the Ethereum community, and we are a team of trust and respect.
If anyone (not me) reports an ENS edit or change, I'd like to see their review and gauge if it's a good idea. This technique not only protects a person's key from leaks, but it is also self-regulating. The board or council is responsible for reviewing all recommendations and always remembering the best interests of the Ethereum community.
Therefore, for some, converting ENS to DAO is just one more step in that direction. I can't influence the direction of things and I have to persuade others that it's a good idea. However, as more and more people keep making mistakes, major mistakes can inevitably result. But at the same time, many DAOs have now developed productive and efficient management systems. .
In my opinion, the worst case we can face is abuse and misappropriation, but this does not guarantee the safety of ENS users and the use of wrong rights without torture.
CR: Can you tell us how you created the distribution of ENS tokens? Why is this so?
New Jersey:Establishing a token distribution process is also essential to achieving our long-term goal: good products for the community. Distributing tokens is the most common way to examine the number of registrations made by users or the time of registration. However, there is also a problem with this distribution: some people who want to use the system for their own benefit will receive more policies, which is not necessary for the development of the system, and those who have used the system. did not receive much reward.
Therefore, we want to create a system capable of identifying the users of the system and distributing airdrops to the real users of the system. Moreover, these measures should be difficult to forge.
Therefore, we divide the airdrop into two parts. Half of it depends on the days the account was previously registered. So if you have domain name registration from day one, you can get the biggest airdrops. However, if you register the day before the Snapshot, you will not be charged. It's a difficult day to forge, but it's a very good distribution plan because you have to think about airdrops since the day ENS was developed 4 years ago to succeed in forging.
However, this model ignores those who wish to join the ENS, so the other half of the drops are subdivided based on the expired last name. We think this is a good indicator. Because if you think that the ENS cannot be completed in the long term, you will not register for 10 or 8 years, up to 1 or 2 years. So if you want to register for a long time, it means that you trust ENS and this domain name can be used for a long time. However, the registration period is more than 8 years. Because someone has wanted to enroll for thousands of years, they still had to change the entire DAO for it.
The last point is whether you configure your domain name as your first DNS domain name. The other two drop locations.
CR: What part of the total token produced will be distributed to the user and the holder of the ENS?
New Jersey:25% will be distributed to airdrop holders and 50% will remain in the DAO safe to be kept by token holders.
CR: What is the ENS token market? How much does a token cost?
New Jersey:Tokens are meant as management tokens and DAOs can add additional functionality to them, but our main goal is to have the people who have helped ENS complete the administration to help manage the entire system of tokens. So his job is to get ENS tokens, he can send his voting rights to someone else, who can vote on how to use the funds to fund other public health campaigns and other issues. visible. How to adjust the voting system.
CR: How will the Vault tokens be distributed in the next step? Is there an inflation mechanism? What are your goals?
New Jersey:The 5 million tokens in the safe can be used at any time, while the remaining 45 million have a four-year payback to prevent the church's 50 million tokens from being transferred in the future. . The token rate increase is 2%, and DAO can start voting in November of next year to allocate 2% of all tokens to the address, this decision can only be made once per year.
CR: So the annual increase is 2%?
New Jersey:Yes, you can choose from a 2% workout.
CR: So can insurers always decide on a particular ad?
New Jersey:Yes.
Release of the ENS
CR: Is it a one-month drop?
New Jersey:On November 1, an airdrop was announced. The actual drop took place on November 8 and it is already November 24, so it's been about 3 weeks since the announcement.
CR: What management contract did you get at that time?
New Jersey:It's good to see that things are starting to go well. As expected, before the launch of the Article Zero charter, some discussions explained why ENS charters and DAOs could be placed outside the regulations. It's a deal, but I'm very happy to see the community's involvement as well. We would also like to see recommendations for moving vault from multiple signers to DAO. This will be a request for approval for multiple signatories.
However, there are some unexpected things like when calculating the drop multiplier a problem gradually arises. If the account that accepts drops has a default ENS register, that number may be given a drop multiplier, but some people have pointed out that the ENS name of some of the more expensive users will be another user's name. I know a lot of people do this for safety's sake but this money also uses ENS but still can't get airdrop multiplier.
Therefore, the idea is now very popular in the discussion. We plan to send additional airdrops to these users for approximately US $ 200,000 in DAO tokens. Of the 137,000 users who received the drop, approximately 2,000 users received this additional drop.
In the next step, we'll look at how to set up a working group and provide special resources so that we don't have to seek approval from the entire DAO for 5 ETH funding. Managing the DAO will be difficult.
CR: It sounds interesting, but what role do you play in it?
New Jersey:I also run True Names, a development company that develops most of the ENS processes. In some cases, they seek funding from DAO to continue their work. Additionally, we have partnered with management to ensure a smooth process so that human consensus can be truly assessed and ultimately implemented through voting.
CR: Do you think that your development company will be the only organization that will develop the ENS in the future? Or will you become a DAO and allow other developers to compete with you or the ENS?
New Jersey:Of course, we don't want to be the only company, but if we're good enough, we can work with other companies rather than competing with others, and I think it will be better. But even if we don't do well, I hope others can stand up too. And I hope, however, that someone will stand up and say, "Give us some of your budget and we can accomplish more." "
CR: I am satisfied with this new economic model developed by DAO. I know the airdrop only lasts 3 weeks, so I would like to ask you what instructions or first you get by adding tokens to ENS.
New Jersey:COO Brantley's Twitter message is now unknown online. "You are responsible for the drop, not the drop token," he said. I thought it was fun and sure enough it immediately resonated with people. I'm joking that the impact of this tweet in helping people understand ENS DAO is greater than all previous efforts put together.
Now that more and more people are choosing to represent other people to resolve their token issues, we've implemented an invoicing process that encourages people to become agents. It remains to be seen how token delegation will change in the future depending on the characteristics DAOs wish to provide to non-regulatory tokens.
CR: I took to Twitter to ask people questions, and one of the questions was "Am I pledging my chips?" "
New Jersey:Yes, I have no idea about this problem. In my opinion, you need to understand the development goals of ENS and DAO first, and if you want to commit to achieving those goals, I will make people plant words. One of the coolest things I've seen is changing the current voting process so that it can be recognized when you vote. This way you can encourage people to vote for the ENS. Thus, long-time ENS users will receive more feedback than those who are just happy with the vote.
ENS as a digital number
CR: What is the long-term vision of the ENS?
New Jersey:Our long term vision is to become the registered name for all digital services around the world. We are improving our DNS technology to make it simpler and easier. So, we not only need an Ethereum registration service, but also a domain name as part of the distribution itself. For example, we launched an entry-level service with Ethereum that can be used with Ethereum. This account acts as your personal identifier and displays your name and your personal image, which is compatible with the ENS.
CR: So you want to provide domain names for all blockchain addresses, not Ethereum addresses?
New Jersey:Yes, we support over 100 popular blockchains.
CR: We are working hard to become ENS digital digit, and we hope to be able to login on behalf of Google or Facebook. So, do you want to login with your own blockchain address in the future?
New Jersey:This is a problem, and unlike these systems, you can use your own encryption keys to control your privacy without relying on third-party service providers.
CR: What do you think of developing such a consumer base? Do you think people will have their own digital data which contains all of their assets, NFTs, and data from their interactions with multiple DApps? What does a blockchain user profile look like?
New Jersey:We just posted a photo of the new president, and in this case, it contains a lot of information. Like you say, it's the same. You can manage and edit your personal data, but you cannot create histories. But that's what we're going to build in the future.
CR: I think the avatar is NFT in the user's wallet?
New Jersey:Yes, but you can use any images you want, but I want to learn more about NFTs and make it easier to set up NFTs as avatars.
CR: Do you think this new user profile will join Web 2.0 in the future? Can I use ENS to log into Twitter and have my profile picture as an avatar? Can these joint ventures be successful?
New Jersey:This is what we want to see, and the direction that goes into working with Ethereum is working. We are developing an OAuth gateway, the key is the same authentication that Google, Facebook and GitHub use for access. This means that you only have to submit one of them and update your existing web 2.0 application to use it. Step into a single gateway and integrate it with existing processes that use it.
CR: It sounds good, but what good is it? Continuing to use Twitter as an example, can you send encryption information to other Twitter users?
New Jersey:Yes, our idea is that there is only one integration for each service, so you only have to configure your profile once and your profile will be visible on each service and will see those who want to follow you . you use. Twitter may choose to provide you with personal information. So you can use your existing Twitter login number as an ENS file. Your domain name is your username in addition to .twitter.com. It can be used by other services. , Get your Twitter avatar and get personal information.
CR: I am welcome. If you start using DeFi and Web 3.0 and access other DApps using the MetaMask or Ethereum wallet, access to Web 2.0 is completely eclipsed. This way, you don't have to remember your password multiple times as you have to disclose your email address and personal information, but if you can access it in your Ethereum wallet or blockchain wallet, everything will be fine. easier.
New Jersey:It's natural.
Integration of the ENS into Web 2.0
CR: How does the ENS integrate internet registration and website design?
New Jersey:I think it would be twofold. The first is that with ENS today you can host your website on IPFS or some other archive and link to the ENS domain name. For example, if you are using a browser with MetaMask, just enter your .eth domain name and add the number after the ENS domain name and it will load on your website like any other DNS domain name. . . If you are not using this browser or want to link this post elsewhere, just add a .link or .lambo file to the end of your ENS domain name and it can be done through the site help. It is used by people all over the world.
Instead, ENS also integrates all DNS namespaces. So in the twitter.com example mentioned earlier, Twitter may need the name twitter.com in ENS, so twitter.com can be used as the ENS name instead of twitter.eth. So you can configure using your wallet, but more interestingly, you can manage your website and create subdomains for all your users.
Thus, each user can have their own twitter.com address or any other name they wish to use. Therefore, we are putting all of these existing DNS records into ENS, as we believe that improving our existing domain name registration services is the starting point for future references.
CR: Are web 2.0 domain owners currently setting up .com, .org or another domain name in ENS and associating their current domain name with their blockchain account?
New Jersey:Yes, most are like that. However, some flagship sites, notably national codes, cannot be set up, while the remaining 97-98% of presidents are free to set up and log on.
CR: Can I use Defiant.io and get it from ENS and link it to my account? I think I already have TheDefiant.eth email address.
New Jersey:Yes, what you can do.
CR: Yes. What can I do with my account after I have connected it?
New Jersey:Sure, all that you can do with your life is good. You can link it to IPFS content or your own wallet, and you can send subdomains using contracts, so that you can share subdomains with users or manually send names to your personal account. for other purposes.
If you want to share the Defiant.eth subdomain name with people, people can keep your domain name forever and become security aware. However, DNS records cannot be guaranteed because ownership depends on the external DNS registrar and the actual owner of the DNS domain name. However, you can create a personal profile in Defiant.io when using another ENS app. This will display the information when you log in.
CR: If you could give each Defiant user a unique ENS URL name, would that name appear in TheDefiant.io profile?
New Jersey:Yes Yes.
CR: Can I keep this name forever? He said that different profile pages have different characteristics and properties. For example, paying users might have special names to access the payment terms, but can websites recognize these names and allow them to access them?
New Jersey:Indeed.
CR: A tweet announced by ENS Director of Operations Brantley Milligan has caught the interest of many. He said, “I want everyone to understand that most of the findings from this domain name are not world famous names. Since we adopted .ETH, people cannot use it, but registry entries like .sol and .crypto can be used by anyone. “Can you explain this tweet?
New Jersey:So when we think of domain names with the last word, we usually think of existing DNS namespaces (.com, .net, .org), but over a thousand top-names have appeared. They are all advertised and administered through the Internet for Registration and Registration (ICANN). The only reason that registration is available is if the organization has been running the competition for a few years, so that applicants can apply for a new registration, and the organization is upcoming. This registration name can be assigned to a successful candidate. And it is almost certain to organize such a race again in the next few years.
This domain name is recognized by all browsers and applications in the United States. As a result, other blockchain registration systems also started with many different domain names, and sometimes more than one top level domain name in a system. This poses a problem: the connection of the two equations is not the same. Crypto is very popular today, and .crypto domain names can also be very popular at auction, so it is not yet clear which of the more decentralized registration systems will eventually get the domain name.
The suffix .eth is bad luck. This is because our ETH is still a national agreement for Ethiopia. However, we do not intend to offer this domain name. We continue to work hard to work with our online community, and we think, “We want our own name, but we won't destroy the global name. Change, we're coming together to staff more, and I think we've done a good job in this area.
CR: Yes. But it's a bit stupid. So you can embed an existing web 2.0 name in an ENS and attach an address, and associate a generic DNS name with a blockchain address, but a naturally existing web 3.0 domain .sol and .crypto can do that. ? It's available in Web 3.0, but can it happen in Web 2.0? Will there be other competitions? And what I'm not sure is if you have .crypto registered with ENS, do you really have it?
New Jersey:As a result, the ENS is working hard to only publish .eth names. So if you could give a person a .crypto domain name it would be your primary domain name in ENS and it would be managed by that person and not on demand. this. .Crypto registered blockchain naming system.
CR: So what does this mean for .crypto owners today?
New Jersey:What I mean is there will be two competing servers in the future, they both ask for the same domain name, but in fact the domain name is for different servers which would pose problem. For example, people may think they are using a system like .crypto, but in reality it is different so you will lose more money than the bottom line. This situation is risky, but the exception is not because ICANN cannot prevent people from using their domain name. Therefore, a domain name must have more than one host, one in DNS and one in its own domain name.
lucky coincidence
CR: So what do you plan to do with the difference between .eth?
New Jersey:This is true, because eth is still a country and many countries now have two country letters like .uk, .ch, .nz, and so on. Thus, this national policy was retained, but could not be disseminated. We look forward to working with Ethiopia and reaching agreement on how .eth.
CR: It's very interesting.
New Jersey:Yes Yes. I think all records should minimize these inconsistencies. And I don't think you can advertise the best names with buzzwords. Because it can lead to huge conflicts on the internet.
CR: You mentioned in the interview that the cost of fuel for Ethereum is several times higher than the actual registration fee for ENS. How do you plan to solve this problem? Do you want to use layer 2?
New Jersey:Yes, we have plans for this, we discussed this in a few meetings and listened to Vitalik's advice and details for him. Our main idea is that we want people to select Layer 2 themselves based on the protocol they want to become a member of rather than ENS Standard 2. It can be a second name like TheDefiant.eth, or it can be Optimism, Arbitrum, or whatever network you think is appropriate.
In the long run, we'll see how to change the names of new secondary names like .eth to L2. However, in the short term we will focus on managing L2 participants and creating subdomains. Many users receive subdomains provided by wallet providers or third parties via L2 instead of registering on their own second level.
CR: So what's the next step for the ENS? What products are developed in the future? What items do you think will be announced in the future?
New Jersey:We hope that in the future, at least for the proprietary distribution, we can start the previously mentioned L2 project and start with Optimism first. We have made significant improvements to the manager to improve the user experience and provide new features. At the same time, we have also developed a big smart contract which makes Name Wrapper more easily publish subdomains with restricted licenses. We have also made significant improvements, increasing efficiency and reducing fuel costs. These improvements have improved the user experience of recording and managing records in ENS.
CR: When did you think Web 3.0 connections would be so popular?
New Jersey:As access with Ethereum improves and grows rapidly, and more websites will start using the program, I expect to receive early signals over the next 2-3 months. I have also heard that some large Web 2.0 companies are also starting to adopt and use it, taking advantage of the miracle. Like the ENS and others, adoption and acceptance of Web 3.0 access by all does not happen overnight, but we have already started well and we hope that it can produce big results. of snow. .
CR: Remind me of a tweet from the COO of Discord. In a tweet, it was suggested that people could sign up with Ethereum in the future, but this was also denied. We want to hear from you on this issue.
New Jersey:I am very disappointed with the feedback from some people because I think the appearance of Sign-In With Ethereum is very good. I realize that some people like to hate crypto. It is true that the crypto community and the crypto itself still have a lot of issues to solve, but we never want people to be stuck endlessly because it makes it easier for us. It all seems to be sinful and meaningless.
CR: I agree. It was a real disappointment. We hope more people will view access to Ethereum as a support tool for managing their digital identity. I have another question: what is the most common misunderstanding at the ENS?
New Jersey:The most common confusion about ENS is that ENS only has .eth domain names, but in fact ENS has DNS names as well. Also, people think that ENS can only be used to name a wallet, but in fact, it can be used for IPFS content or it can be used for news, user search, symbols. digital, etc.
CR: This meeting is very pleasant. We look forward to Web 3.0 and the future of ENS, and hope more people enjoy learning more about ENS.
New Jersey:It's a compliment. Thank you. for
